The Federation was established as an Incorporated Society. The main role of the Federation is to serve the religious and social needs of the Muslim community in New Zealand.

The Federation is made up of 17 Council Members representing the Muslim community in the North and South Islands of New Zealand. Seven Executives are then elected from the Council membership to serve a 2-year term in the Executive Committee.
