Purpose & Structure

Charitable Purpose

Pet Refuge NZ was established to provide a free, safe, temporary shelter for pets of families escaping domestic violence. Pet Refuge seeks to remove one of the significant barriers to leaving domestic violence of serious concerns about the threat of violence and cruelty towards the victim’s pets, by providing them with a safe haven.

Entity Structure

Pet Refuge NZ was established as a charitable trust governed by 6 trustees. 14 employees manage the refuge and care for the pets, and 5 staff work in marketing and administration roles. Several individuals donate their professional services including the trustees. The charitable trust contracts a veterinarian to care for the pets in the refuge.
