Purpose & Structure

Charitable Purpose

Gisborne Museum of Art and History Trust’s mission is to operate Tairāwhiti Museum as a gateway/waharoa and resource for the art, culture and heritage of our communities. Our aims are: 1. To foster the recognition and interpretation of Tairāwhiti’s heritage landscape and develop the Museum as a key point from which this landscape is interpreted; 2. To educate individual children and adults and the broader community to appreciate, enjoy, and learn more about the Tairāwhiti region and its history, art and culture; 3. To refine our approach to collections to enable sustainable storage, care and respect for, and access to, collection items; 4. To build our collection of locally significant art and strengthen the public awareness of our art gallery role; 5. To strengthen our business infrastructure and capability and relationships within the communities of the region.
