Purpose & Structure

Charitable Purpose

The role and function of the Board has been set down in the MMTB Act (1988) and the Maori Trust Boards Act 1955. They give the Board the legal mandate to work on behalf of, and represent, the “Maniapoto Tribe”. The role and function of the Board has been set down in these Acts and the Board works on behalf of, and represents, the "Maniapoto Tribe". Section 24(1) of the Māori Trust Board Act sets out the key functions of the Board. The first is "to administer its assets in accordance with the provisions of the Act for the general benefit of its beneficiaries" and that it may use its financial resources for the following: · The provision of health; · The promotion of social and economic welfare; and · The promotion of education and vocational training.

Entity Structure

The Maniapoto Māori Trust Board (MMTB) was established under the Maniapoto Māori Trust Board Act 1988 (the Act) and the Māori Trust Boards Act 1955. As such it is the RIO for Maniapoto Iwi. The MMTB is sole shareholder and Corporate Trustee for the Maniapoto Fisheries Trust (MFT) set up as the MIO for the purposes of the Maori Fisheries Act 2004 to receive and administer the fisheries assets for Ngati Maniapoto. Te Kupenga o Mnaiapoto Ltd is the Asset Holding Company for MFT.
