Purpose & Structure

Charitable Purpose

The purpose of the Trust is to be of benefit to the township of Kawhia and its inhabitants and marae associated with Kawhia ('the community') by (without limitation) providing for and assisting in and promoting the development of new and the enhancement of: (i) existing community facilities; (ii) the safety and protection of the community; (iii) cultural, economic, educational activities and facilities; (iv) recreation and leisure facilities providing they are in the interests of the general social welfare of the community; (v) such other purposes as the Trustees consider will benefit the community. In attaining its purposes, the Trust shall recognise the views and expectations of tangata whenua.

Entity Structure

The Kawhia Community Projects Trust (Inc.) is a charitable trust established in June 2010. Six trustees are parties to the Deed of Trust. The Deed sets out the purpose of the Trust which includes recognising the views and expectations of tangata whenua. On 23 August 2010 it was registered as a charitable entity under the Charities Act 2005. Donations made to the Trust are tax deductible. The Trust also acts as an 'umbrella' for other community organisations such as the Kawhia Kai Festival.
