Purpose & Structure

Charitable Purpose

Matahiwi Cemetery Reserve (Matahiwi 5 & 6), located at 376 Lawn Road, Clive, Hastings, was set apart as a Māori Reservation on 21 March 1902 for the purpose of a cemetery. The purpose of the reservation was expanded to include a meeting house on 9 June 1936 and is known as Matahiwi Marae. Vision Matahiwi Marae is the hub of its surrounding communities, a safe, living and inviting environment that is busy with activities for the whānau and community, where all people are welcome, engaged, uplifted, inspired and sustained in the tikanga and culture of Matahiwi. Mission To provide a well-equipped resource and to develop hapū with the knowledge and confidence to uphold the tikanga and kawa of Matahiwi; to accommodate whānau hapū iwi and maintain our relationship with local communities.

Matahiwi Marae is a marae on Māori Reservation Land. The Māori Reservation Regulations 1994 require that where a reservation is a marae the trustees of the reservation shall draw up, in agreement with the beneficiaries of the marae, a charter for the reservation. A copy of the Matahiwi Marae Charter is published below. This Charter is not a part of the marae's formal rules as required under s17(1)(c) of the Charities Act 2005.
